Blah, Blah, Blah…….Bikram Blog….Definition of “A CHALLENGE”
What is “a challenge” to you???? What challenges do you face every day of your life?? What are special challenges that you have faced out of the ordinary throughout your lifetime???
All challenges aren’t created equal. When we started our Bikram Yoga 30 day challenge, students complained about the ‘challenge’ of time . Job related time constraints, family obligations, and the 90 minute time frame were just a few of the “challenges” peeps faced. (One person actually said, “if it was just an hour and 15 minutes it would be more doable for me ”…………….)
Some admitted their aversion was just plain laziness and lack of motivation.
I walked into the Bikram Yoga studio this morning with a renewed perspective of the old phrase, “don’t sweat the small stuff.” I told both my 9am and 11am classes how wonderful it was to wake up to such a spectacular desert morning and be able to “walk” into the yoga room on my own two legs. I can’t remember the last time my functioning two legs occupied space in my thoughts.
We “suffer” in our BIKRAM yoga room because it is hot, because we are forced to look at our imperfections in the mirror and because we have to work our bodies and our minds for a FULL 90 MINUTES. Awww , poor babies.
Last night our Bikram Yoga family finally got to meet the Grajeda family and to see first hand the repercussions of a horrific accident that left an innocent 10 year old boy without his leg.
It gave us all reason to pause. It gave us all reason to reflect, re-evaluate and to put a few things into perspective.
Adrian Grajeda fought for his life a few months ago and won, but his “challenge” didn’t end there. This tough, happy go lucky boy along with his loving older brother Alex, and his AMAZING parents Brandy and Eli have challenges that most of us will never have to face.
THE GRAJEDA FAMILY : Eliubar, Adrian, Alex and Brandy
Both Brandy and Eli lost their jobs shortly after Adrian’s accident. With medical bills mounting, and the wheels of justice turning slowly there is very little light at the BEGINNING of their tunnel. Adrian will need a new prosthetic leg EVERY YEAR until he reaches his full growth. With every new “leg” comes yet another medical bill. With every new leg comes yet another physical and mental adjustment period. NOW THAT’s a CHALLENGE!!!!
Adrian Grajeda with his FIRST PERMANENT PROSTHETIC LEG !!!!!
I hope their story gets enough attention that this family gets the much needed help they need and to ease the VERY DIFFICULT CHALLENGES THEY FACE AHEAD.
As far as our bi-annual Bikram Yoga 30 day “challenge” goes, making the commitment to take care of our very able bodies and our minds for 90 minutes in a hot room for thirty days (30) out of our “busy” lives is hardly a challenge, but rather a PRIVILEGE !
Hope to see you in the hot room soon “suffering and challenging” yourself with a renewed perspective!
Namaste`
